The 4th on the 5th

Parades, grilling burgers, swimming, relaxing, fireworks, flags. Eating copious amounts of food.

It must have been the 4th of July.

Except we didn't venture out for our local parade. We should have so that Annelise would have a better understanding of the meaning of the holiday. Note to self: next year go to the parade.

In the early afternoon the skies opened up.

Ixnay on the immingsway.

So we made do hanging around Pappo's house for the afternoon.

We tried to be 4thly festive in our attire at least. The beach ball did too.

Yummy burgers and sausage were grilled and consumed, before I had the presence of mind to snap a photo. Hunger plays with your mind, you know.

However, the watermelon was delightful
After a late lunch, the marathon Mexican Train domino game began. We naively misjudged how long starting with the double 12s would actually take. Ahem.

Five hours later, it was just about time for the fireworks to pop. We are usually able to see two or three different firework shows from in front of our house, so we don't delve into the crowds. Those pesky skeeters started in on us though, and Annelise was close to spontaneous combustion, so we called it a night.

Seems like I need to learn how to shoot manual mode at night. I tried the night setting, but the slightest camera shake blurred everything. Must practice.

This morning, when my alarm beeped at 5:00 to rouse me from my slumber, I almost talked myself out of going for my run. After a later night, the urge to snooze is terribly strong. Now that I'm done pounding out 8 miles, I'm rather glad I didn't listen to myself. Since it was overcast the heat was a little more forgiving today, thank goodness. Now I have an appointment with my foam roller, my pesky ITBs are talking to me.

We are having a lazy daisy Saturday so far, which is wonderful. A. is playing with Play-Doh on the floor while we watch Anne of Green Gables. How much am I loving Ann with an e? Lots! I must admit I have never read the books, but I am planning to do so soon. I am also adding Prince Edward Island to my ever growing list of Someday Sights to See.

How did you celebrate the 4th? Have you played Mexican Train? How do you spend lazy Saturdays? What do you think of Anne of Green Gables?

  1. Mexican train is a game that I was introuduced to at the beach last year. Sadly, we did not play this year because it was tons of fun!!

    Hope you had a wonderful 4th :o)

  2. We had rain too yesterday so it was a quiet, lazy day for us. At least you still grilled. We ordered pizza. Didn't feel very patriotic but Papa John isn't one to complain. :)

  3. Way to go getting up at 5:00am!! I don't know how you do it, plus running 8 miles! I'm so impressed.

We got up at 5:30 this morning so we could make it to the balloon festival by 6:30 and I have felt hammered all day.

I've never played any kind of dominoes so I'm clueless about Mexican Train.

  4. Reason # 987 why I am a dork: I just realized why the fireworks photos were blurry, I didn't have the lens set on auto-focus. Duh! So much for our fireworks documentation for 2008.

  5. Fireworks photo are hard to master, no doubt. You guys look like you had a fantatic fourth!

  6. For future fireworks shoots: Put your camera in manual mode. Lower the shutter speed until it says "bulb." It usually is the slowest shutter speed setting. Then when you go to take the picture, hold the shutter button down for a second or two. This will give you a very long exposure, and will make the fireworks look really cool. (It also works for sparklers, too). You can experiment with the length of time you leave the shutter open - the longer the better.

    Have fun!

  7. I love lazy saturdays! I am so impressed you ran-
We love anne of green gables here too! the movies are great I haven't read the books but my oldest daughter loved them

  8. way to run the next morning! i've been whining about early morning runs since being here. your 4th sounded like a lot of fun!

  9. Hey! This is Katie from the favorite things swap. Thanks so much for my super cute package. I loved it and everything in it. YOu are so sweet and honestly I can't thank you enough! Glad you had a nice fourth of july. It was hot and humid here in Utah but we braved the heat for two parades and fireworks. We were wiped out for sure afterwards. Thanks again for the good mail package. I hope you get yours soon!

  10. Yes, yes, yes, Holly! You must go to PEI. It was so super fun. I've decided my favorite vacations are those inspired by books or movies.

  11. Anne with an e is one of my favorite fictional characters. You'll love the books, and A will too in a few years. They're still some of my favorite novels. Glad your 4th was lazy and enjoyable.

  12. A great holiday. Just celebrating with family and friends in the sun and don't have to worry about presents and decorating (except the flag of course!)

Some lazy Saturdays at our house have been spent in front of the tube with a movie on, too.

I'm so glad you got up at 5am. Good girl. That is an inspiration to me. :o)

I'd love to hear what you have to say. I try to reply to comments and answer questions within each post so be sure to check back from time to time. Thanks for visiting!
