Miscellany Monday

A bit of this and that of late...

Two weeks ago I spied Edie's (@lifeingrace) InstaGram post about her homemade laundry detergent and knew immediately I had to make some myself, mainly because I want to be like Edie when I grow up (even though I am a couple of years older than her, but whatever). Some of my friends had made their own detergent before with a similar recipe but I had never tried it because I didn't know how to get a really fresh smelling scent.

The stars aligned and I was actually at the grocery store a few days later and bought all of my ingredients before I could put this off indefinitely.

* 1 box Borax (4 lbs. 12 oz.)
* 1 box Arm & Hammer Washing Soda (55oz.)
* 1 jar Oxy Clean (1.3 lbs.)
* 1 can Gain Fireworks for scent
* 3 bars Fars-Naptha laundry soap, grated

Other than the grating, which Annelise and I took turns with, everything else was super easy peasy to mix together (I need a new grater, an old school box one instead of a tiny mandolin style) in an empty glass jar I already had.
I felt so accomplished and semi-frugal and pioneerish all at the same time!

I've been using 2T, placing it in the bottom of my washer before adding clothes. It smells wonderful AND is getting our clothes clean. We have a top-loading HE washer and it works fine, though I don't use the dispenser because it's labeled liquid only.

Our laundry room is functional but not Pinterest-y decorated at all, however I like how the glass jar adds a splash of style just the same.
In other non-laundry related news, Scott and I celebrated, and I use that term rather loosely, since it fell on a Tuesday, our 19th Wedding Anniversary on June 17th.
We didn't have any big plans, since we're not Planny Plannersons at all, yet we still managed to stretch our anniversary across three partial days just the same. On our actual anniversary we went to a   reunion dinner for our United marriage class, which was really fun.

Then on Friday we had a late family lunch at a local seafood place, Top Water Grill,  which was nice. In a verbal walk down memory lane we realized that we hadn't eaten there since our anniversary in 2004 before we had Annelise (we had started the adoption process but hadn't gotten a referral and were in the midst of out last ditch IVF effort that June and I was all hepped up on hormones, so I'm sure I was delightful at that dinner).
I like the restaurants around this area because they are mostly more mom and pop joints and don't feed the huge Landry's shark (I'm talking to you, Kemah Boardwalk). Plus I think it's cool that you can just drive up and park your boat.

Not that we have a boat, but still.
Annelise had fun feeding the seagulls her leftover french fries until one of them pooped on her.

Everything's fun until you get pooped on.

Then on Saturday evening Scott and I went to see this...
It was the new Tom Cruse Sci-Fi-action movie which was surprisingly good and quite entertaining. Scott and I both really liked it even though we usually only consider Tom Cruise useful for mocking. We ate at Pei Wei after, which it really isn't essential for you to know that but I feel like I need to share just the same.

And that was how we celebrated 19 years.
Confession: since today is June 30th and I've only reached 35 miles out of my #54milesinjune goal, I think it's highly unlikely I will meet my goal after all.

However, running 35 miles always trumps sitting in the recliner, so I'm choosing to be pleased with my efforts and start fresh with July's challenge.

Happy Monday, y'all!

  1. Way to go with your Pioneer, frugality and industriousness! I have yet to try that. Is your cheese grater now a dedicated soap grater or did it come super clean?

    It's supposed to be good luck to get pooped on by a bird!

    I liked that movie too and still hold a dear place in my heart for Tom Cruise because Top Gun came out when I was in high school and we saw it like 7 times in the theater.

    Wow 35 miles is muy impressivo!! I ran 0.0 miles!

I'd love to hear what you have to say. I try to reply to comments and answer questions within each post so be sure to check back from time to time. Thanks for visiting!
