Five for Friday

01.) I'm afraid my #46milesinmarch running streak may be screeching to a halt, seeing as I've only run once this week.
But that's okay.

I'm not totally throwing in the towel, maybe I'll rack up a few more miles before March waves her goodbye.

That said, I have managed to fit in three P90X3 workouts this week (Total Synergistics, Agility X (wow!) and Yoga X) and must confess I am highly impressed with the program so far. Tony Horton and his team pack a LOT into 30 minutes. I'm talking Serious. Sweat. People.

The workouts incorporate lots of multiple muscle group moves along with moves that target your balance and core, so you're working hard all over, more than you might think (see above, serious sweat note).

And just when you think you can't take any more you realize you only have three minutes left, so YAY! Time flies.

02.) Yesterday marked my eighth dance recital meeting.
And no, my tolerance for dance moms has not gotten better over time.

At least certain bossy or know-it-all types. 

But speaking of dance, it's getting harder each year to force gently encourage Annelise to continue. The spring recital followed by a summer break usually revives her flagging spirit, but right now we're in the trenches. She loves jazz and most of tap but barely tolerates ballet, no matter how much we remind her how dancing helps strengthen her skills for other athletics (the whole yin-yang thing I guess). Of course I don't want to force her to go if she truly hates it, but I don't want her to quit and regret it later. So I'm sticking my head in the sand and ignoring her whines of woe.

At least for the foreseeable future.

03.) Scott and I had a breakfast date this morning at one of our favorite places.
I got the Athena scramble for the third time in a row because I am nothing if not predictable. Who can resist scrambled eggs, asparagus, feta cheese and mushrooms? Not I, said the fly.

04.) I had a conference with Annelise's teacher this week, not for any particular reason or issue (thank goodness!) but I guess it's a required thing in the fall and the spring. Each time we've met, Mrs. Beaty has said the most beautiful prayer before our chat. I love that! What a blessing! I've found myself a little teary (what?!) after listening to her thoughtful, grace filled words. I wish I could pray like that.

It was encouraging to hear her thoughts about Annelise's strengths, her learning style, her independence and vibrant personality (which can often result in demerits). This has been a challenging school year in some ways (new school, more rigorous curriculum) but under Mrs. Beaty's  firm but loving wings Annelise has thrived.

05.) Okay, I know this is so last Friday by now, but I don't care. 

I mean, it's KEVIN BACON paying homage to Ren, dancing, acid washed jeans, cassette tapes and teenage angst all in four minutes of awesomeness on the Tonight Show thirty years after Footloose.
Kevin, you had me at jump back.

And?

You've still got it.

The Short List

01.) Last week I got a little closer to my #46milesinmarch goal, which feels good. I managed to run/walk five days and have racked up 30 miles so far.
I didn't run over the weekend like I had hoped and also skipped yesterday but I'm planning to get back to it later today. Even if I can't fit in 16 miles between now and the end of March (which, let's face it, is a stretch) I'm not going to beat myself up because working toward something is better than doing nothing at all.

02.) Last week also yielded some awesome mail.
I've been using Shakeology fairly regularly but had run out. I've always gotten chocolate but this time I'm trying the vanilla, which is quite yummy.

I usually have a shake for breakfast or mid-morning snack but had gotten waaayy out of the habit over the last couple of months. It feels great to get back in the habit.

Y'all know I'm a true blue fan of the Beachbody home fitness DVD programs (at least the ones we've tried). P90X is awesome but a drawback is the time factor as most of the workouts are an hour or more. We were thrilled to hear they were coming out with P90X3 which compacts new challenging workouts into only 30 minutes.

That's awesome!

I did my first workout (Total Synergistics) yesterday and loved it. It was a total body workout that was challenging but I enjoyed the variety of exercises packed into just 30 minutes. The time flew by, plus Tony Horton is a hoot!

03.) We had a fun night at the Kemah Boardwalk Friday evening thanks to the generosity of our sweet friends.
04.) Annelise had her first soccer game of the new season bright and early Saturday morning. They changed the age divisions (again) so she is back with the 9-10 year olds. There are several kids on the team that she's played with before and we love her coach (he's the epitome of calm), so all is well.

We celebrated her return to soccer (and ignored her team's defeat) at IHOP after the game.
05.) And finally, there's this...
Annelise had been saving her money (a generous portion of which came from pet sitting for our neighbors) for a while for a new guitar and Saturday she pulled the trigger.

Now we must get her some lessons muy pronto before my ears bleed out.

Miscellany Monday

We kicked off our extensive St. Patrick's Day celebrations in one fell swoop with the wearing of her shamrock shirt from two St. Paddy's ago (thank goodness it still fits) and eating a big bowl of Lucky Charms from a chartreuse green fiesta bowl.
And that was the extent of our festivities.

As long as she gets her annual box of Lucky Charms, girlfriend is set.

We'll leave the dying of toilet bowls green, setting leprechaun traps and serving up green pancakes to those pesky over achievers.

I'm sure all of that sugar (with a side of turkey sausage links) made her return to school just peachy.

(Sorry Mrs. B.!)

After tackling our grunge-y floors with the vacuum and mop I hit the streets.
It was sunny but still cool and windy so I wore my SkirtSports capris and a long sleeve top, which all felt great at the beginning of my run but by the end I was a bit overheated.

But all in all the sunshine, four miles and loud tunes pounding in my ears = free therapy and some vitamin D, so yay!

I started a new book this evening, Eleanor and Park, and am already hooked only 1/4 of the way in. It's a bittersweet, teenage angst ridden love story set in the 80s and is already making want to watch Say Anything as soon as possible.

And in other unrelated news, Scott and I are tentatively going back to Dancing With the Stars and all its spray tan, glitter and cheese so I can see DJ Tanner (Candace Cameron Bure) compete. At least for one week.

Tonight I tried oil pulling for the first time. Have you heard of that? It's basically swishing coconut oil around in your mouth, like a mouthwash for 5-20 minutes (yikes!) to *pull* toxins and bacteria from your teeth, gums and overall mouth area, I guess. I made it the length of my shower, which may have been close to the ten minute range but near the end I thought I would gag.

But.

My teeth feel crazy clean!! Like I just came back from the hygienist kind of clean, which was surprising. I don't know if this is something I'd do every day, but probably a few times a week. It's supposed to be really good for you and help whiten teeth, so we'll see.

And since there is no logical way to summarize a post about Lucky Charms, running, teenage love, ballroom dancing and oil pulling...I will just bid y'all good night.

Six for Saturday

01.) I'm not sure why, but it feels rather loser-esque to be blogging on a Saturday night.

02.) Not that we're big Saturday night paint-the-towners like, ever, so I can't quite put my finger on the reason typing out randomy-randoms feels more lame than usual.

03.) Scott came home from work early on Thursday and we three went to see the Lego movie.
And everything was awesome! (that's a song from the movie)

Normally, I am not a fan of 3D movies. Call me a old fogey but I think 3D is totally unnecessary except maybe in small doses and an entire movie with all that depth weirdness and things flying out all the time at you is just too much. We didn't want to wait for the next showing so I had to suck it up and put on those dorky glasses. Thankfully, I didn't get a headache, which is always a fear of mine.

The movie was cute and had a good message, plus, we love, love, LOVE legos.

04.) Later that evening I dragged my people out of the house to go on a run slash bike ride to keep my #46milesinmarch momentum going.
We definitely need to do that more often!

Annelise was on high coyote alert (there were none) and quite whiny at times about the cold wind but she soldiered on bravely.

05.) She got the brilliant idea to re-organize her million Rainbow Loom bands into separate colors, which they once were for approximately ten seconds six months ago, and since then it's been something of a free for all.
As you can see she made some progress with the blue bands.

Shortly after this photo was snapped she lost all interest in her project, as ten year olds are wont to do, and for the rest of the day we were walking over piles of mixed up bands.

And her nerd glasses (revamped 3D glasses, we kept them, shhhh) obviously helped with sorting yet not quite enough to inspire her to finish.

06.) So we never really watched the Tonight Show with Jay Leno, because, well, yawn. We rarely watched Late Night with Jimmy Fallon because, well, late night (although we adore Jimmy, he's not only hilarious he seems like a genuinely nice guy).

Now that Jimmy in hosting The Tonight Show we've set a timer to record it and then Scott and I watch together at some point and catch up.

Y'all have probably seen this photobomb stunt by now but I'm still posting it just in case you missed it because not only is there Jimmy, there's Don Draper (swoon) (Jon Hamm) being goofy, which, you know, is adorable.

Well, Hellooooooooo!

She said in her best Seinfeld voice.

La, la, la.

I know it's been forever and a week since I've blogged and I'm sure y'all have all been on the edge of your seats for an update.

(crickets)

In a nutshell, we went on a cruise two weeks ago and then of course came home and life continued and somewhere along the way I lost my fragile blogging mojo.

And now we are in the throws of spring break.

(Not that we're throwing anything.)

I usually stomp my feet and whine for days about the time change, and don't get me wrong, I'm still not a fan, but I am thankful that this year it happened right before spring break so we didn't have to acknowledge said time change all that much (except appreciate the extra evening daylight time of course).

As far as spring break goes, we are perfecting the art of laziness.

Which is delightful.

Although we did venture out the other day to crazy town, otherwise known as Jumping World. It's an indoor trampoline park that recently opened up in our area but we hadn't checked it out yet.

So of course the least crowded time to check something new out is during spring break, right?

Um...no.

I almost turned around and drove home when I saw the jammed parking lot and the four, count them, four, daycare buses.

But we were meeting friends and I had to suck it up.
All in all, the kids had fun and I tolerated my 1.5 hours. You pay by the hour so I bought two hours for Annelise not knowing for sure how long that really is when you are jumping all over the place like a mexican jumping bean.

We finished up the afternoon with lunch at the Golden Arches (yuck, but what can you do) where the kids dug deep and found a resurgence of energy for the play area.

In other news, spring break has marked my return to running. Or at least wogging. Whatever. I'm getting back out there, jiggly bits and all.
So far I've managed to get 9 miles under my belt this week and it feels pretty good.

I've made a shaky commitment to #46milesinmarch  (a monthly Instagram challenge) even though I started 10 days late. Even if I don't make it all the way to 46 I like having a goal and keeping track of my progress just the same.
